Living Without Desire – When Apathy Takes Hold Of You
Living without desire is a global reflection of apathy. It is the lack of motivation for what is happening in the present or what will happen in the future. Getting up in the morning is often a struggle. It’s like a slope that is too steep to climb because of the weight that has taken control of a person’s state of mind.
Remember that it is incredibly difficult for depressed people to get up in the morning. This is because they have to spend time on certain tasks while lacking the strength to perform them. In a way, they have to put in extra effort because of the extra weight they carry with them. All this to accomplish simple tasks such as eating breakfast, getting dressed and taking a shower. Thus, apathy is so gloomy that it becomes too difficult to take an initiative.
To live without desire in silence
At times, apathy goes unnoticed. This is because the affected person overcompensates for the lack of motivation. However, they replace it with effort. Thus, people living with a person living in a spiral of reluctance may not realize how hurt they are. Precisely because of this, we should take a moment to think about how we can notice that they are apathetic even though they seem to be fine.
This is very relevant as at times you may not care about the emotional state of others. This is especially true when the other person does not seem to be struggling, and when they continue to fulfill their duties at work, at home and in their community. They can even smile and joke! The truth is, however, that they live without desire, but they keep it to themselves.
In the face of apathy, avoid this topic completely
When someone tells you how they feel, you may give them genuine advice. Maybe you try to comfort them by saying things like “this is going well”, “this will go over, that too”, ” everyone has problems”, “do not be sad”, or “do not give so much importance to it” : Yes, you may say these things with the intention of helping them. However, this type of advice is useless for a person living without desire. They will not comfort them at all and can actually do the opposite. A person with depression may want to cut off contact with you if they think you do not understand them. In fact, they will retire even more.
So, what should you do if someone tells you that they are living without desire? First and foremost, they may need you to support them and actively listen to them. They need to feel that you are trying to understand them and that they can trust you. They will find comfort in expressing what it means for them to live without desire, in explaining how difficult it is for them to move forward.
Beyond apathy
According to research , there may be a psychological component associated with living without desire, in a state of apathy. Researchers link these to specific brain circuits – the same ones that can sometimes show abnormal behaviors. Thus, they believe that there may be other external factors behind someone’s apathy.
An example of this is that there may be an underlying psychological condition, depression or dysthymia behind apathy. Thus, one of the first steps to overcoming it is to rule out medical and psychological problems.
In these cases, it is absolutely necessary to get help, whether it is in the person’s immediate environment or from a professional. This is because the pain can sometimes be unbearable, to the point that you can not cope with it all alone. As you can see, they need outside help.
